Chris
Taylor Jazz Pianist/Composer
Originally from Wichita,
Kansas, where he began his musical studies at the age of nine,
Taylor started playing professionally six years later with local
Wichita bands, concentrating on perfecting techniques of his
first love, jazz.
In 1974, he started a
six-year association with jazz guitarist Jerry Hahn, resulting
in concert work throughout the mid‑west, which included four
Wichita Jazz Festivals and studio recordings for Orrin Keepnews,
of Fantasy Records, in Berkley, California.
In 1977, after receiving
a Bachelor Degree from Wichita State University, he moved to
Rochester, New York, and joined the Johnny "Spider" Martin
Quintet. They toured much of the east coast, performing concerts
with, and along side, many jazz greats such as Monty Alexander,
Ramsey Lewis, and Dizzy Gillespie.
In 1979, he moved to
Philadelphia. There, he performed solo engagements, TV
appearances, and extensive club work with many local jazz
artists, as well as composing and arranging for various musical
projects.
He moved to the Boston
area in August 1991. Taylor has since performed and recorded
with The Matt Gordy Group, The Either/Orchestra, The John
Allmark Orchestra with Clay Osborne, Leonard Hochman and Eula
Lawrence, the Phil Person Sextet, and twice with the Rich
Greenblatt Vibes Quintet. In addition, he has performed
regularly in Cape Cod with local greats Lou Columbo and Dick
Johnson. Since February of 1997, his own trio has been resident
band at Prudential’s Top of the Hub restaurant in Boston. Other
current performances, aside from those with his own trio, will
find Taylor in solo to big band settings in Boston, Rhode Island
and Cape Cod areas.
